Goddess University: Athena in the Workplace

Makeover stories are the best, especially during the Back-to-School season. Back-to-School has always been a high holy season for me. Seventeen magazine’s August issue was a kind of bible to me in the eighties. The message was that you could reinvent yourself from the inside out for the new school year. Everything was possible. Clean slates were a real and figurative thing.

I have a head for business and a bod for sin. Is there anything wrong with that?

The movies Working Girl with Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver and Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair embody the rigorous hope that we can change reality through force of will. In both movies, intelligent women step into leadership roles where their preparation and smarts win the day. They are Aphrodites who become Athenas while retaining the joy that their Aphrodite sides brought them. They win the best job, the best guy, the best outfits, and the best revenge on their enemies.

(And before you dismiss them as purely sexist makeover fantasies, I’ll point out that both Tess of Working Girl and Elle of Legally Blonde enjoyed the support of powerful female friendships, actively chose their fellas, and ended their stories in leadership positions.)

Consider September the beginning of a new year, even if you aren’t an educator or a student. The beginning of autumn is a perfect time for a fresh perspective. Makeover fantasies are a great escape, but with the goddess Athena as a guide anyone can make the decision to prepare, study and accomplish greatness.  Athena is the goddess of wisdom and good sense. She is an excellent mentor, shape shifter, and maker of useful things. So are you.

Call on the example of Athena in September’s new year. Now is the perfect time for the kind of positive change that comes from hard work and focused intention.

Just ask Tess and Elle from my two favorite makeover movies about all that can happen when you go after what you want with everything you have. Do your homework, call up your support systems and make over your world.
